
Dr. Babatunde Bale
Optometrist, University of Benin
Dr. Babatunde Bale is an Optometrist, an Early-Career Researcher, a Data Analyst, and co-founder of the award-winning non-profit The R.E.T.I.N.A Initiative, which provides essential eye care interventions to underserved communities in Nigeria. He is a graduate of the University of Benin’s Faculty of Optometry and currently practices at a leading tertiary eye care facility in Nigeria. His years of community health leadership have garnered significant acclaim. He is an awardee of the prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Nigeria for developing Nigeria’s first First-Aid Eye Kit used to manage ocular emergencies. More recently, he was honored as the winner of YouthGive Africa’s 2024 contest, spotlighting his transformative impact in public eye healthcare. His further honors include being a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Campus Ambassador, a Clinton Global Initiative University alumnus, a HarvardX Crossroads Emerging Leaders fellow, and a Wells Mountain Initiative Graduate Scholar. He is also a finalist for the Active Citizenship Award and ORG Impact Awards. At the same time, he is an advisory council member of the Public Interest Registry, where he provides input and recommendations on issues affecting the global ORG community of nonprofits and mission-driven organisations. Beyond clinical work, Babatunde has authored over 15 peer-reviewed research publications across different highly reputable journals. He has also presented at scientific research conferences such as the International AIDS Conference and the University of Benin’s 2nd Annual Life Science Research Conference, where he was awarded the Best Poster Presentation. He is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of professionals.
