Neural Mechanisms of Myopia
Course Overview:
Why does a longer eyeball develop in the first place? For decades, myopia was framed almost entirely as an optical and biometric problem, a mismatch between refractive power and axial length, correctable with a lens. Over the past several decades, a large body of research has shown that this framing, while accurate, leaves out the more fundamental question: what biological system decides how much an eye should grow, and what goes wrong when that system pushes an eye to grow too long? The answer lies substantially in neuroscience, specifically, in the retina’s own local signalling circuitry and the cascade of molecular signals it sends outward through the choroid to the sclera.
This course, Neural Mechanisms of Myopia, is designed for vision scientists, optometry and ophthalmology trainees, and researchers or industry professionals working on next-generation myopia-control therapies who want to understand the biological machinery underlying axial elongation, not just its optical consequences. It builds directly on the psychophysical and applied foundations covered in this Academy’s companion course, Psychophysics of Myopia, but shifts focus from how blur is perceived to how the eye’s own tissues detect and respond to that blur at a cellular and molecular level.
