Orientation and Mobility (O&M) empowers people who are blind or have low vision to travel safely, confidently, and independently. This presentation explores the core principles of O&M, including spatial awareness, sensory use, route planning, and problem-solving in real-world environments. The presentation will highlight practical strategies such as human guide techniques, long cane skills, environmental analysis, and the role of technology. Through examples and best-practice frameworks, the session demonstrates how effective O&M instruction enhances participation, choice, and quality of life across the lifespan.

Speaker Bio:-

Karyn is a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. She has over 25 years working in the disability field including Orientation and Mobility, Case Management, Inclusion Support, Family Services Coordinator and Developmental Education qualifications. She has worked with all age groups and is dedicated to help people increase their independence, community participation, confidence and to achieve their goals.
Karyn has been working with the blind and low vision community for the past 10 years and loves her work as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. She loves the opportunity to support people to remain connected to their community and build confidence with their mobility.
During her spare time Karyn loves spending time with her husband, her adult children, jogging, musicals and learning how to play golf.
