Traditionally, research involves disciplinary domains or inter-disciplinary ones involving collaboration between different disciplines, where researchers work together to solve research problems. Later, trans-disciplinary research involves stakeholders from industry, policy makers, and community members, etc., to solve the society-centred research challenges. (1) Nowadays, many globalisation research problems are present, and a few of these complex problems have not been tackled. Experts from one domain are often unaware of insights, advancements, and innovations from other disciplines. (2,3) This may hinder progress and limit the potential solutions. (2) These complex problems can be tackled by approaching multi-disciplinary research. (2)

Multi-disciplinary Research

Multi-disciplinary research is the type where researchers from diverse disciplines collaborate to unlock complex challenges. It enables researchers from various disciplines to converge their knowledge, perspectives, and methodologies, comprehending the complex issues and addressing the solutions. It encourages cross-pollination of ideas and fosters innovation. (1,2) It enables integration of insights from various disciplines, including medical, science, technology, engineering, arts, and humanities. (2) By addressing the complex issues, they contribute to advancements in society and well-being. Recently, big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing have played a vital role in multi-disciplinary research, aiding in solving complex issues. (1,2)

Some benefits of multi-disciplinary research include promoting collaboration with other disciplines, critical thinking, fostering creativity and innovation to enhance technology, and holistic solutions for complex problems. (2,3)

Challenges of multi-disciplinary research are effective communication as a language barrier with other disciplines, funding limitations, and conflicts of interest. (2,3)

Multi-disciplinary Research in Optometry

In Optometry, disciplinary, trans-disciplinary, and inter-disciplinary research are more common. For complex research challenges, a multi-disciplinary approach can be integrated to provide insights and novel solutions. Some of the areas where a multi-disciplinary approach can be applied in the optometry field to foster innovation include myopia control, advanced diagnostic instruments, low vision devices, etc. A multi-disciplinary approach in Optometry can be integrated with various disciplines, as given in Figure 1.

Multi-disciplinary Practice in Optometry

Multi-disciplinary clinical practice is where professionals from various disciplines work independently to treat the patient. (5) Multi-disciplinary interventions are the key component in early interventions. For neuromotor disorders, multi-disciplinary intervention helps to reduce the disabilities of the patient and improve their life. (6)

Early diagnosis and management are an integral part of optometry practice. In addition to that, multi-disciplinary practice plays a key role in minimising patient disabilities and maximising rehabilitation. A study stated that for allergic conjunctivitis, multi-disciplinary practice is essential to maximise patient care. (7) Timely referral to various disciplines (Figure 2. Examples of Multi-disciplinary Practice) is an essential component to enhance the quality of life of an individual.

Conclusion

A multi-disciplinary research approach helps in providing deeper insights and novel innovations for complex optometry research problems. Multi-disciplinary clinical practice aids in minimising patient disabilities while enhancing the rehabilitation process. Thus, in Optometry, a multi-disciplinary approach aids in solving the needs and enhancing the betterment of vision in the world.
